Parent - Infant Interaction

چکیده

The mother-infant relationship consists of interaction sequences, each of which is in some measure unique. We must therefore study pooled data from interactions of the same ‘type’ occurring within a limited time period. Changes in the relationship must be assessed by comparing data from different time periods. To understand the dynamics of the interaction, it is essential to formulate sharply the questions being asked. In particular, the following questions must not be confused: ‘Which partner is primarily responsible for determining the course of this type of interaction in a particular time period?, ‘Changes in which partner are responsible for changes in the pattern of interaction between time periods?’ and ‘Are differences between mothers or between infants primarily responsible for inter-dyad differences in any one time period? The argument is illustrated with data from rhesus monkeys. That the mother-infant relationship depends on interactions in which the behaviour of each partner affects and is affected by that of the other no longer needs to be emphasized (e.g. Bell 1968). That the interactions themselves, even those involving very young babies, can be of considerable complexity, is becoming progressively more widely recognized. By analogy with interactional sequences that have been studied in non-human species (e.g. Baerends et al. 1955; Hinde 1970; Nelson 1964; Simpson 1968, 1973), we must expect each response of each individual to be determined not only by the preceding behaviour of the partner, but also by earlier behavioural events, the individual’s current state, the environmental context, and so on. Because the determinants are multiple, susceptible to mutual influence, and complex, each interaction sequence is in some measure unique. But science has no techniques for coping with unique events: we can ask questions only about populations of events judged to be, by some criterion, similar. We must therefore study categories of individually unique interaction sequences, regarding the component events as having probabilistic relations to each other. In practice

Parent-infant interaction in infant siblings at risk of autism.

Recent models of the early emergence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) propose an interaction between risk susceptibility and the infant's social environment, resulting in a progressively atypical developmental trajectory. The infant's early social environmental experience consists mostly of interaction with caregivers, yet there has been little systematic study of early parent-infant interacti...

Effects of Parental Interaction on Infant Vocalization Rate, Variability and Vocal Type.

Examination of infant vocalization patterns across interactive and noninteractive contexts may facilitate better understanding of early communication development. In the current study, with 24 infant-parent dyads, infant volubility increased significantly when parent interaction ceased (presenting a "still face," or SF) after a period of normal interaction ("face-to-face," or FF). Infant volubi...

The dynamic still-face effect: do infants decrease bidding over time when parents are not responsive?

The still-face paradigm (SFP) was designed to assess infant expectations that parents will respond to infant communicative signals. During the still-face (SF) episode, the parent ceases interaction and maintains a neutral expression. Original, qualitative descriptions of infant behavior suggested changes within the SF episode: infants decrease bidding and disengage from their impassive parent. ...

Infant Affect during Parent-Infant Interaction at 3 and 6 Months: Differences Between Mothers and Fathers and Influence of Parent History of Depression.

Fifty families participated in mother- and father-infant still-face interaction at infant ages 3 and 6 months as part of a study of affect in early parent-infant relationships. Infants' positive and negative affect and parents' positive affect and physical play were coded from videotapes. Consistent with previous research, during the normal condition, mothers displayed more positive affect than...

Maternal and Paternal Postpartum Depression: Effects on Early Infant-Parent Interactions

While there is a well-established literature on the detrimental effects of maternal depression on infant-mother interaction and on infant development, the association between paternal postpartum depression and infant development has been rarely investigated. The relative newness of research on paternal postpartum depression, inconsistent research methods, lack of standardized guidelines, clinic...
